Discussion:
Are soft drinks allowed in Disney theme parks (through the metal detectors)?

Last time I went to a Disney theme park in 2000, my backpack was never
inspected so I could bring in a few soft drink cans to avoid waiting
in line to pay $3 for a small drink. With the new security measures
and metal detectors, obviously aluminum cans will set off the alarms.

So my question is: once you set off the alarm and they see the soft
drinks in your backpack or pocket, will Disney let you take them in or
will they confiscate them or do something worse?

I'm curious if Disney is just interested in security (which is fine
with me) and will still allow the soft drinks in, or if they are using
the heightened security measures as an excuse to confisciate soft
drinks to force people to pay more for their refreshments to increase
profits.

They don't have metal detectors at Disney, only the security checkpoint
where security looks through your bag. I've brought in drinks, snacks,
bottled beverages, etc. etc. and never had a problem.

If you have a backpack, you can expect them to make you open it.

To my knowledge, there are no metal detectors at the parks. (Or at least
it's not SOP to scan guests.) And no, they don't confiscate soda, and
I've never had snacks confiscated. I imagine they would confiscate a
*large* amount of food, but not the amount I carry, even on NYE (a box of
Little Debbies, some sunflower seeds, pretzels or Combos, and at least
two, if not three, 20 oz bottles of soda).

HOWEVER, they *do not* allow glass containers. Plastic, and AFAIK metal,
are fine. (Kinda odd, since Ramune comes in a glass bottle, and it's
available at Mitsukoshi...)

Depends on whose line you go through. One time I saw a cast member let a
person in with a KFC meal (in a bucket).
Another time, I saw a cast member let another person in with a six-pack
of pepsi.

No metal detectors, just a visual search of packs and bags for weapons. It
is possible that they may enforce the no glass bottles rule but that is
not specificly what they are looking for. I know that the no glass rule is
true, but I have not heard any no cans rule. But just to be on the safe
side I would suggest purchasing your soft drinks in plastic bottles. They
do not confiscate drinks in plastic (personal experience with this).

Many people also walk in with the backpacks that stores water or your own
drinks... There isn't any written rule that says you can't bring in your own
snacks or drinks.

Really?
I was always under the impression that the rules did state that you
can't-but that Disney usually choose not to enforce it.

I've never seen anything, and I always see people carrying them around. Also
backstage they sell bottles of Coke products and who is to say we can't
carry them onstage? I did all the time!

I haven't seen rules on this at the parks posted in a very long time. Maybe
I'm just not looking in the right place?

Don't worry, an RADP picnic meet is being set up for those interested in
meeting within the MK gates. The only stipulation is that you have to bring in
some "banned" food or drink for the picnic...absolutely no park food or drink
allowed at the picnic!

There is no alarm to set off. Screening is not done with a metal
detector, it is done by physical inspection of all bags. Don't worry
about bringing in a soft drink bottle.

Thanks.......Nice to know I'm not going crazy.............
I've never heard of anyone getting food confiscated or told not to take it
into the parks though (like I said before it's not *usually* enforced) but I
have heard of someone been told to lose the glass bottle they had a drink in
before they were allowed to enter.

Their job is to confiscate dangerous items, not items that violate the
admission agreement. They're there for security, not profit
protection.

When we go we usually have fruit snacks and goldfish crackers. The security
guards would always tease us asking if they could have some as they haven't had
lunch yet. I have never encountered any dirty looks.

I've seen entire coolers being brought in (soft sided). The official policy
may disallow food, but I'd be surprised if they did enforce it.

The only food-related ban I can think of that might really be enforced
is the use of straws at AK. The concern is with animals choking on
them. You also get no straws with drinks at AKL.
